How a Meet Works

• The first thing to do at a meet is two-fold: Be on time and check-in with your team parent. This person will alert the coaches if you are not there in case changes need to be made in the relays or heats. It is very important to be on time for warm-ups and to check-in.
• Order of Events: Freestyle Relay, Freestyle, Backstroke, Individual Medley, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Medley Relay.
• 6 and under swimmers do the first 3 events.
• Everyone swims Freestyle & Backstroke.
• We are limited to 3 heats of Breaststroke and Butterfly.
• We are limited to 2 heats of swimmers in the Individual Medley.
• The fastest 10 swimmers in the meet will receive points for scoring regardless of the heat they are placed
• The number of relays scored will be dependent on the number entries of each team.
• Swimmers are placed in the heats by the meet manager software based on previous teams in the event.
• All swimmers receive a ribbon for every race regardless of the heat or points earned, if any.

Please Read this in case you are called upon to be a Timer:

• There are three timers per lane.
• We will arrange for you to be in a certain lane with someone from the other team.
• If during a meet you need a potty break, you can tell the head timer or ask any board member to take your place.
• This is an important job. You are charged with paying attention, marking down a correct time, and not letting down the swimmer in your lane.
• We ask that you get up out of your chair to watch the swimmer touch the wall.
• The system is set up for three times. You will be given a pad of paper we call “timing slips” and a pencil. You will record the specific race and the three official times that you get from the stopwatches.
• All you need to do after recording the times is hand the slip of paper to the runner.
• The scorekeeper will do all the work to determine the swimmer’s official time. (1) The middle time will be circled. (2) If one of the times is one second more or less that time has to be thrown out. The remaining two are averaged. (3) If there are only two times recorded then they are averaged. (4) If there is only one score then you have to take it.
• If someone on our team or our opposing team has a timer that isn’t quite attentive and doing the best for the swimmer then please report to a POST Officer. The timer can be replaced.
